Newborn Sessions

Those newborn days are chaotic, beautiful, exhausting, wonderful, emotional, overwhelming…pretty much all the emotions turned up to 11. Let me hold your hand and walk you through every step of the newborn session process so you that you can cross a few things off your (loooong) list. Wardrobe? I have you (and your baby) covered. Location? We can shoot at my house, or I can help you prepare your home to look perfect on camera. Rowdy big siblings? I have a few tricks up my sleeve. I will take care of you so that you can just relax for a minute and soak up the sweetness of this season.

How it works

I recommend scheduling your newborn session for about 7-10 days after your due date. If baby decides to come early (or late!), we can adjust our session date. We can shoot at my home studio, or in your home. My newborn sessions are lifestyle, which means that I aim for images to look real and organic. I will guide you and your family in poses that look joyful, authentic, and natural. We will make sure to get a variety of shots - full family photos, siblings, solo photos of baby, and all the different combinations that time allows. For baby’s solo portraits, I will capture your little one in poses that look comfortable and natural for a baby. I believe babies are cute just being babies, so I will swaddle and gently pose your precious babe yawning, sleeping, stretching, and being an overall cutie. We can also take photos of baby naked or in just a diaper.

Locations

My home studio

Ignore the mess at home and come take photos in my studio. I have racks of beautiful clothing options for just about everyone, a simple bed with white bedding, a gray couch, beautiful hardwood flooring, and perfect lighting. Just show up and let me do the rest!

Your house

No need to leave the house, I’ll come to you and capture the beautiful chaos in the comfort of your own home. This is a sweet opportunity to snap photos of your baby’s nursery, and your big kids will be comfortable in their own space. I bring along a few props, swaddles, blankets, and even some lighting equipment if needed.

Outdoors

If you are more comfortable with an outdoor session, let’s make it happen! In the winter, we probably want to aim for the evening, and in the summer, we will want to beat the heat with an early morning session. I will bring along a few blankets and baskets we can use for your baby’s solo portraits.

FAQ

When should I book my session?

You can go ahead and book your session right now! Whether you are a few months along, or your due date is getting close, I recommend that you schedule your newborn session for 7 - 10 days after baby’s due date. If baby comes early or late, we can always adjust your session date. It’s easier to move a session date once it’s on the calendar than to get into the calendar at the last minute, so the earlier you book, the better.

Will you take photos of the whole family, or just baby?

There are 3 different options available. For those who want portraits of the whole family and the baby, I recommend choosing a Family Newborn Session. If you just want photos of your newborn, choose the Just The Baby Session. If you’d like to take family photos, then transition to taking portraits of the baby in multiple outfits and poses, choose the I Want It All Session. If there are no big siblings involved, and your heart is set on posed photos of baby, it is possible to include photos with mom and dad in the Just The Baby Session.

How are my images delivered, and what is the turnaround time?

Within 48 hours after our session, I will send you a proofs gallery with all usable images.  You will then select your favorite images for me to edit in detail.  You will have the opportunity to leave me notes, if you have specific editing requests, and you will also be able to purchase additional images. Once I have your final selection choices, I will deliver your beautiful gallery within 3 weeks. You will receive your high-resolution edited digital images in an online gallery where you can view, download, share, and print.

How long is the session?

Your session fee includes includes anywhere from 60 minutes to 4 hours of shooting, depending on which session type you select. The session time is not only the amount of time I’m shooting, but also includes any breaks necessary for baby or big siblings.

Why is there a price difference between a newborn session and a full session?

I have been doing this for a long time now, so please trust me when I say that a full session (one hour) is just not enough time for a newborn session. Babies need lots of breaks, and it is important to me that our session pace is based on what is best for your little one. Everyone will be more relaxed if we are not rushed, and the final product will be worth it. Additionally, newborns usually need a little more TLC in the editing stage.

Will you do posed portraits of baby?

I would call my style “simple lifestyle posed” portraits.  I think babies look cute without needing a bunch of props or extreme posing, but I will help guide your baby into some “baby-led” poses.  I will make sure your little one looks adorable for solo portraits, but if highly posed portraits with lots of props are your thing, we might not be a good match.  Please let me know if you have additional questions about this, but I suggest checking out the photos here on my website and on my Instagram to get a sense of my posing style.

When is payment due?

I require a retainer fee of $50 upon booking, and the remaining balance is due at the time of our session.  Your session fee includes your high-resolution, edited digital images (in both color and black & white).  These will be delivered to you in a private online gallery where you can view and download, as well as share with family and friends.

What should I wear?

When you book with me, you will receive instant access to my comprehensive Style Guide, with lots of tips for all situations.  There is tons of information in the Guide about styling newborn sessions, but essentially, you will want to keep the clothing simple, with soft colors and fabrics.  I have a Client Closet with options for mama, littles, and your newborn, so make sure you take a look at all the options I have for you!

Anything I missed?

If there is anything else you would like to know before booking, please feel free to reach out via email or text.  I am looking forward to working with you!
